GABLE, DUTCH GABLE OR SKILLION CARPORTS: WHICH IS THE BEST FOR YOUR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY?

GABLE, DUTCH GABLE OR SKILLION CARPORTS: WHICH IS THE BEST FOR YOUR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY?

Carports are great to protect your vehicle from the sun and weather.

Gable, Dutch Gable, and skillion carports have different roof designs. A gable carport has a roof with two sloping sides which meet at the top (the ridge). The roof looks look like a triangle. A Dutch Gable or gablet roof is a roof with a small gable at the top of a hip roof. A skillion roof, on the other hand, is gently sloping and streamlined. We provide a range of engineer certified steel carports throughout Victoria and into surrounding states.

Making the choice of which carport type is right for you can come down to personal choice. Here are some facts about both.

A Gabled Carport

  • Can take a little longer to install
  • Has infills (small walls) at each end and on the side under the gutter giving more protection from the sun and make the carport cooler overall and from the rain making it a perfect alfresco
  • Is popular for its aesthetic appearance
  • Can blend in with your home as the roof shape is similar
  • Has increased air circulation which can keep your car cooler
  • Have an open feel
  • Is generally of a greater height than a skillion carport due to the shape of the roof

A Dutch Gabled or Gablet Carport

  • Takes the longest to install
  • Has infills (small walls) at each end and on the side under the gutter giving more protection from the sun and make the carport cooler overall and from the rain making it a perfect alfresco
  • Is popular for its designer appearance
  • Can blend in with your home as the roof shape is similar
  • Is a great design as a freestanding alfresco
  • Is generally of a greater height than a skillion carport due to the shape of the roof

A Skillion Carport

  • Is easier to install than a gable or dutch gable
  • Is modern and streamlined
  • Although flat does have a small incline/gentle slope to allow for rainwater to run off
  • Can have eaves / be cantilevered so posts are inset for ease of navigating vehicles
  • Cuts down on the guttering and spouting required giving generally one collection point
  • Has a great surface area for collecting rain water
  • Because of the surface area, it is ideal to use in conjunction with a water tank
  • Can easily provide a free standing back verandah or outdoor area

Each type is ideal for use as a carport, or also as an outdoor or alfresco area, storage area with shed or workshop.
